Sports fan / sporty

Overview

  • If your giftee loves sports (either watching them or participating in them), consider using this theme.
  • Think about things that a sports or fitness fan would love to receive or do:
    • Sporting event, as a spectator:
      • There are the big name professional sports you can go watch but you could also consider going to watch the minor league/college/high school teams in your area. They are generally less expensive and the action can be just as intense.
      • As an alternative to the mainstream sporting events, there’s also the fringe sports like X-Games, Crashed Ice, mountain biking, water sports and others.
    • Sporting event, as a participant:
      • You could do any of the sports mentioned above with just a couple people or make up some teams.
      • Try one of the lesser known or played sports like archeryswimmingskiing, field hockey, lacrosse, handball…
  • Watch a sports related movie (eg: Field of Dreams, Dodge Ball).
  • Educationlessons in your giftee’s sport of choice or something completely new to them (eg: skatinghorseback ridingswimming).
  • Clothing and gear: a gift certificate to their favorite athletic store, a team jersey, a helmet, cleats, a bat…
  • Looking for something a little more unique? See if you can track down signed memorabilia for your giftee’s favourite athlete or arrange a tour of their favourite arena.
  • On a budget? Try a sporty but inexpensive activity like going for a bicycle ride or splash around at the local swimming pool.
  • You can keep the theme simple and just present gifts around sport or you can incorporate other themes. For instance:
  • Think outside the box. If they love the Red Sox, get them some red socks. Give them a tie and make it represent a “tie” breaker.
  • Another option is to work the theme around different types of sport. You could present the gifts as an “all sports” theme and incorporate as many as possible. For example: you might give tickets to a hockey game, a tennis ball, some white socks, watch Field of Dreams and go for a swim.
  • Stuck for ideas? Consider donating to a charitable organization that promotes sports for underprivileged kids.
  • Try wrapping your gift with plain paper and applying pictures of sports or gear onto the gift, or draw them on yourself (eg: soccer ball, baseball bat).
  • Tie a small sports related gift into the ribbon around the gift (eg: a golf tee, a badminton birdie, running socks).
  • Consider trying to show them the sport each gift is associated with. You could do this as charades or with props. Your giftee has to guess the sport before they can open each gift.
  • Use quotes or phrases that relate to your theme when you present the gifts or in your card. For example:
    • Happy birthday to a guy/gal who’s always a good sport!
    • Happy birthday sport.
    • We ‘fit’ together perfectly. Happy anniversary!
