Alcohol: flammable

  • Want to create a dramatic, flavour enhancing spectacle during dinner tonight? Interested in a drink that wows?
  • In theory, any beverage with 40% or more alcohol will ignite, although it takes at least 50% to produce a steady flame.
  • The list below includes some of the better known flammable alcohols.
    • Amaretto
    • Cognac
    • Everclear
    • Gin — burns, but the flame is not as pretty as higher proof alcohols
    • Grand Marnier — smells pleasant while burning
    • Kahlúa
    • Overproof rum (also known as Rum 151)
    • Bacardi 151 — burns especially clean and fast
    • Sambucca — produces a beautiful blue flame and has a distinct aniseed smell
    • Scotch whiskey
    • Vodka — produces big, blue, beautiful flames
  • Warnings and words of wisdom:
    • Arm hair grows back.
    • Crayola markers are a little thick to look like real eyebrows, try Sharpie.
    • Drinking a beverage from a glass too quickly after extinguishing the flame is akin to kissing a curling iron.
    • You can smell burnt nose hair for days.
