Overview

If your giftee loves spending time outside or surrounded by nature (or wants to start doing more outside), consider using this theme.

The sky’s the limit in terms of activities, but a few suggestions for you:
- Summer activities: a day at the beach, canoeing, a bicycle ride, camping/campfire, horseback riding, jet skiing, rafting, rock climbing…
- Winter activities: build a snowman, skiing (downhill, cross country), hockey, ice skating…
- Educational: lessons (eg: wilderness first aid, horseback riding), information sessions at national, provincial and state parks (have a look at their websites to check out what’s being offered)…
Events: outdoor sports event works beautifully here. Think about events that are a little less common just to change things up (archery, field hockey, skiing). If you’re on a budget, local high schools and universities often have games that are lot more affordable but can be just as exciting as the professional teams.
Keep in mind items that allow your giftee to be outside more (eg: patio furniture, barbecues, a gift card to their favourite athletic/outdoor adventure store) and gear like binoculars, sunglasses, backpacks, etc.
On a budget? Try an activity like a hike, flying a kite, going stargazing or simply sprucing up your own community by picking up trash.
You can keep the theme simple and just present gifts around the outdoors/nature or you can incorporate other themes. For instance:
- Consider using our Elements theme. Some options here include:
  - Water: beach, skiing, skating, hockey.
  - Air/Wind: flying a kite, or just getting out for some fresh air.
  - Earth: rock climbing, hiking.
  - Fire: campfire, BBQ.
- Outdoor activities are often associated with a specific season (eg: hockey – winter, baseball – summer).
- If your giftee is also very sporty, have a look at our Sporty or Yoga theme pages. There are so many different poses that could be worked into the Yoga theme (eg: bow pose – archery, boat pose – canoeing, mountain pose – skiing).
Think outside the box. For instance, the ‘call of nature’ refers to having to use the bathroom so a toilet or sink could work here.
Stuck for ideas? There are many charitable organizations that help youth experience the outdoors or that protect the environment. Consider donating to one on your giftee’s behalf.

Wrapping

Try wrapping your gift with plain paper and applying pictures of nature onto the gift, or draw them on yourself (eg: trees, mountains).
Use shoelaces as ribbon around the gift.
Tie a small outdoor related item into the ribbon around the gift (eg: sunglasses).

Presentation

Consider trying to show them the activity each gift is associated with. You could do this as charades or with props. Your giftee has to guess the activity before they can open each gift.
Use quotes or phrases that relate to your theme when you present the gifts or in your card. For example:
- I thought there was an ‘outside’ chance you might enjoy these activities for you birthday.
- I decided to think ‘outside’ the box for your birthday this year.
- Happy birthday to a guy/gal who has always liked to colour ‘outside’ the lines.
- Your good ‘nature’ is one of the many reasons I fell in love with you. Happy anniversary.
